Ep. #9 Anxiety as your Super Power

Hello My Friends

The joy of remaining calm.

Do you want to be calm in the face of the storm, what ever type of storm that is buffeting you about?

Being anxious is a physical reaction your body is having to something your brain is perceiving as a threat.
This is great news.

I remember my first anxiety attack, it was terrifying, my body felt like it couldn’t breathe, my heart felt like it was racing in my chest.
Completely new sensations for me.
Anxiety was not a normal emotion for me, my normal emotion at the time was anger, I used anger to motivate me into action.
Anxiety however had the opposite effect, it froze me, I couldn’t make decisions, I couldn’t work out what was real in my body and what was coming from my brain.

Anxiety is an emotion that is being created by a thought.
The thoughts creating my anxiety were well hidden.

Do you feel anxious?
When you do, what is going on around you?
Are there physical triggers setting you on edge?
What is your body feeling, list all the sensations, list all the emotions circulating in your body?
Where does anxiety sit in your body? Do you feel it in your gut, or your lungs, your chest, maybe you feel it in your muscles? Name the place in your body where it sits.
What is the thought sitting in behind your emotions?
Do you feel like the world is going to come crashing in around you?
Do you feel like you are not good enough to be doing what you are doing?
Are you stepping into unknown grounds, maybe you are tapping at the glass ceiling of past beliefs and it is scary to move into your next version of yourself?

What ever is generating the feeling of anxiety, you can overcome it.
One of the tips I use when I begin to feel agitated is remind myself that I am okay.
Being in the centre of a calm space, in the middle of my thought storm is entirely my choice.
You have choices, you can resist the feeling of being anxious, and treat it like the enemy.
You can tell yourself scary stories about what anxiety does to you, how anxiety ruins your life, how you are broken, or not good enough.
These stories may appear to be true to you right now.
My question to you is, are these stories making you feel better or worse, are they helping you to show up in your life in a way that makes you feel confident.
Anxiety is your friend, it is in your life to tell you something very important.
If like most of us, you were taught to hide traits that are not what society deems to be polite and nice by burying them and internalizing them as part of who you are, which perpetuates the belief that you are broken in some way, that you are not as good as others because you feel anxious.
I have great news for you, you are normal.
It is normal to feel anxious, the secret to using anxiety for you is to learn how it affects you personally, learn what triggers your anxiety, learn what soothes and calms your fears.
Learn new ways of thinking about the emotion of anxiety, and the thoughts that create it.
By accepting that the feeling of anxiety is normal, and is driven by a thought you are thinking, you can figure out how to work with yourself, instead of working against yourself.
You can feel anxious, know that’s the emotion you’re feeling, acknowledge where it is sitting in your body, unravel the event that triggered it, and find the thought in your brain that is pertetuating the entire situation.

You can find the joy of remaining calm, when it seems life is all topsy turvey around you.

Today’s challenge is to recognize anxiety for what it is, an emotion, figure out how your body feels anxiety, look at the situation you are in, then look at what you are telling yourself about the situation. This is where your thoughts will be coming from.
Remember, you can be calm, even in the face of scary situations.

If you want to live in the centre of calm, turn anxiety into one of your super powers, then connect with me for coaching.
Together we can make a plan for soothing your emotions and retraining your brain, and in the process create the life that makes you happy.

Have a fabulous day my friends. Until next time…

Live your best life, calmly and authentically.
