Dynamic Living: Boredom is a state of mind.

Dynamic Living: Boredom is a state of mind.

Hello, My Friends

Today I thought I’d go a little deeper into boredom.

I see boredom every where.
People living lives of “quiet desperation”
Treading water so to speak, to keep their heads above water.
People who are not finding joy in the things that are right in front of them.

The things we purchase to entertain us, won’t satisfy a bored mind.

The people we use to entertain or distract us, don’t give lasting fulfillment or distraction.
The substances we use to numb or distract us from what we want, but are too afraid to go after, won’t help us get to where we want to be.
Eating, drinking, using drugs, don’t help to ease boredom.
Boredom persists and as we layer all other forms of distraction and false pleasures on top of boredom, we know deep inside that there is more to life, than the way we are living.
When the pain of staying the same is more than the pain of change, we change.

How do we own our boredom?

Boredom comes disguised as discontent.

The sigh after a long day at work, that say’s “I’m over this, I just want to chill out.”
The look of sadness that crosses your face as you look at your bank balance and wonder how you’re going to make another monthly payment.
The feeling of failing even if you appear to have it all, to everyone else.
Boredom is walking around like a zombie, alive but not energized.
Owning our boredom is admitting the content is there, it’s in our lives, and it’s driving us to behave in ways we normally wouldn’t if we were feeling dynamic, alive and energized.

When my kids were young and they came to me complaining they were bored, my go to answer was, “Boredom is a state of mind, change your mind, or I’ll give you something to busy your hands and mind.”
It didn’t take them long to figure out that they were better off figuring out how to entertain themselves, than it was to be cleaning windows for me.

As adults it’s the same, we are often bored because we need new stimulation, we need to do something different.
The old adage, “Of a change is as good as a rest,” is very true. Sometimes going to a different restaurant, going to work a different way, walking in a different area of town, is all you need to refresh your mind.

Notice I didn’t say you needed to buy a new gadget, or add anything more to your schedule. I suggested doing what you are already doing in a different way. Stimulate your mind, wake it up, get it thinking.
Brain activity does not equate to thinking.

Dynamic living is being alert to the cues of boredom, and getting ahead of them with mentally stimulating conversations, waking yourself up to areas of your life that are not how you want them to be.

Boredom is a choice, it is optional.
