Digging Deeper- Discovering the Roots Beneath
“The greatest thing in this world is not so much where we stand, as in what direction we are moving.” — Oliver Wendell Holmes

Last week, you began noticing the leaves — the visible patterns of behaviour, frustration, and reaction that appear in daily life.

How did you get on with last week’s challenge?
Did you notice patterns of behaviours and reactions that you hadn’t noticed before?

We are expanding on this theme of Striking at the Roots by Digging Deeper- Discovering The Roots Beneath.

Every behaviour has a root. Beneath every repeated pattern lies a belief — often invisible, but deeply influential.

This week, we begin to uncover the soil of the subconscious, where the stories of our past still whisper through the present.

An inspirational quote overlaying a blurred image of a tree and construction equipment, stating: 'The greatest thing in this world is not so much where we stand, as in what direction we are moving.' — Oliver Wendell Holmes. The text is decorated with nature motifs, enhancing a theme of growth and development.

Our outer life is the visible expression of our inner soil. Many of the roots that shape our choices were planted long ago — by family, culture, or experience — and we’ve accepted them as truth.
These roots quietly feed the same old leaves, no matter how often we trim them.
“I’m not enough,” “I must please others,” “Success means struggle.”

Beneath every repeated habit lies a root belief — a thought that became a truth, which quietly directs your choices, emotions, and energy.
When you begin to dig deeper, you’ll notice that every pattern carries a message. Your fears, resistances, and habits are not enemies — they are guides, showing you where your roots need attention.
Question your beliefs, thoughts and emotions.
Ask yourself, “When did I first start believing this?” and “Whose voice does this sound like?”
Take note of your answers. Do notice a pattern?

As you repeat this little chant, remember who you are, and the roots you are uncovering and choosing to plant, to nurture your growth.

I dig beneath what’s seen above,
Uncover truth, release with love.
Old roots give way, new life will start,
I plant compassion in my heart.

Repeat this chant while you do this small releasing ritual every time you uncover a root or pattern that no longer serves you.
On a small piece of paper, write your limiting belief or recurring pattern. Hold it for a moment and acknowledge, “This belief once tried to protect me, but it no longer serves me.”
Then, safely burn or bury the paper as a symbol of release. As you do, breathe in the possibility of something new taking root.
Then write down the new belief. Keep this belief near your plant from Week 1. Read it aloud as you water your plant.

It includes instructions for writing down a limiting belief, acknowledging it, and a statement about releasing it, alongside an image of a hand holding a piece of paper in soil.

Your affirmation for this week is…
I courageously uncover the roots of my beliefs and choose to plant only those that nurture my highest growth.

So, how do we uncover these roots? Gently. Begin by tracing each repeating frustration to its base. Ask:

“What am I afraid would happen if I changed this?”

“What am I believing about myself in this moment?”
The answers may surprise you — and that’s a good sign. It means you’re digging where truth hides.

This week is about compassionate curiosity. We’re not judging our old roots; we’re simply learning where they lead.

By shining the light of awareness underground, you give yourself the power to choose which roots stay and which need replacing.
This is not about blame; it’s about understanding. Compassion becomes the shovel that loosens old beliefs and makes room for new truth to take hold.
When you understand your roots, you understand why your life looks the way it does. If your roots are fear-based — “I’m not enough,” “I’ll be abandoned,” or “Success means struggle” — then your actions will naturally grow from those beliefs. But when you plant new roots — beliefs like “I am worthy,” “I am supported,” and “Life flows with ease” — you change everything above the surface.

When a challenge arises this week, pause and ask:

“What am I believing right now that makes me feel this way?”
Trace the emotion back to the belief. Replace it with your chosen truth.
Example: “I’ve failed again” becomes “I’m learning, and progress is enough.”
Notice how your emotional soil begins to shift when your roots are replanted.
As you identify the core belief that may be limiting your growth and creating your current feelings. Write it down in your journal.
Ask yourself where it came from — a parent, teacher, culture, or experience. Once you see its origin, it begins to lose power.

Awareness uproots the invisible.

Here are a few more questions to inspire reflection around your hidden roots.

What old beliefs have I uncovered this week?

Where did these beliefs come from?

Which of these still serve me, and which are ready to be released?

What new truth feels more aligned with who I’m becoming?

How do I feel when I nurture this new belief?

Taking time to answer these reflection questions is not a small exercise — it is deep inner work that can shift the entire course of your life.
When you trace a belief back to its origin, you begin to see that many of your patterns were never truly yours; they were inherited, absorbed, or formed in moments of fear or confusion.
By recognising which beliefs still serve you and which silently limit you, you reclaim your power to choose who you are becoming.
Identifying a new truth isn’t just a mental activity — it begins rewiring your emotional responses, reshaping your self-concept, and expanding what you believe is possible for you.
As you nurture this new belief, you create a compassionate inner environment where confidence, clarity, and freedom can take root.
This is the moment your transformation shifts from awareness to lasting change.

Next week, we’ll explore “Nourishing the Roots — Feeding the Soil of Growth.”

Until Next Time: Remember — As you dig into the soil of your soul, it’s not about perfection; it’s about awareness. What you bring into the light loses its power to keep you stuck.
