Real, lasting growth doesn’t come from fixing symptoms or adjusting what’s outside of us. It begins when we heal the source — the part within, the Roots.
Welcome to Authentic Living Coaching
I’m Linda Codlin, Transformational Life Coach.
Welcome, My Friends.
Over the next four weeks, we’re going to explore what it means to strike at the root
— to transform from the inside out.
Striking at the Root – Transforming from the Inside Out
I believe this is the quickest way to make permanent change in our lives and situations. Real, lasting growth doesn’t come from fixing symptoms or adjusting what’s outside of us. It begins when we heal the source — the part within.
Week 1: Seeing the Leaves – Recognising Surface Patterns
Thoreau once wrote,
“For every thousand hacking at the leaves of evil, there is one striking at the root.”

So ask yourself:
Are you tending to the roots of your life — or just trimming the leaves?
Most of us try to change by managing behaviours, adjusting attitudes, and setting goals — without ever touching the soil beneath.
Yet lasting change begins at the level of belief.
If your roots are grounded in fear, guilt, or unworthiness, your branches will always struggle.
But if your roots are grounded in love, trust, and worthiness, growth happens naturally.
The secret is to transform the lens through which you see life.
When you shift “I’m not good enough” to “I’m learning and growing,” you are replanting your reality.
As you nurture the roots of truth within, your beliefs begin to grow beauty and strength in all you do — creating rich compost for even deeper growth.

A Spell for Strengthening Roots
As you repeat this little chant, remember who you are and the roots you are planting for permanent change:
Roots of truth, I call your power,
Deep below, I plant this flower,
From love it grows, from fear released,
My life expands, my heart finds peace.
Anchor Ritual
Choose a small living plant to symbolise your inner roots. As you water and care for it, repeat this affirmation:
I nurture the roots of truth within me; my beliefs grow beauty and strength in all I do.
Let each leaf remind you that transformation begins beneath the surface.

Start your mornings by asking:
“What root belief do I want to nurture today?”
When challenges arise, pause and ask:
“Is this reaction coming from fear or from truth?”
Journaling, meditation, or quiet reflection will help water the new belief until it grows stronger than the old one.
Understanding the Root
Thoreau’s wisdom invites us to go deeper — not asking “How do I change this behaviour?” but “Why does this behaviour exist in the first place?”
Think of the times you’ve said, “I’ll eat better this week” or “I’ll start moving my body tomorrow.”
You may succeed for a few days, until stress or overwhelm takes over — and the old habit returns.
That’s your root whispering:
“I always feel better after something sweet.”
“I’m too exhausted to move today.”
When we stop hacking at the leaves — the behaviour — and begin asking why it exists, we find the belief feeding it.
When we nurture that root with love instead of fear, grace instead of guilt, and truth instead of unworthiness, the entire tree begins to change.
This Week’s Challenge
This week is about awareness.
Choose one frustration — something that annoys or drains you.
Each time it appears, pause and ask:
“What belief might be feeding this?”
Write down what comes to mind. Don’t judge — just notice.
Keep track of the “leaves” you’ve been trimming and look for the pattern underneath. Awareness begins your healing.

Reflection for Growth
- What habits or struggles seem to repeat in my life?
(What leaves are showing up in the tree of my life?) - What might be the deeper story keeping them alive?
(What belief might be feeding them?) - How would my life feel if that root belief was replaced with truth and compassion?
(What would I replace that old pattern with?)

Real growth doesn’t happen by force — it happens when we nurture what lies unseen.
Next week, we’ll go beneath the surface into Week 2: Digging Deeper – Discovering the Roots Beneath, where you’ll learn to uncover and transform the beliefs that shape your life.
Until next time,
Remember: the roots you tend today create the forest of your tomorrow.
xoxo,
Linda
