Welcome, My Friends.

The month of May was all about social connections, catching up with friends, and family.

Almost ten months ago my older brother was involved in a serious motor accident.
He was riding his motor bike to work on a normal Friday morning, when a young lady turned into his path, she didn’t see him.
That morning changed his life forever.
It also changed his wife’s, their family, me, and my family’s lives, in ways we had no idea it could or would.
It also changed the young lady’s life, along with her family.
It only took a split second to create such a huge life changing event.

This month we are hoping will be the month my brother moves to his home town, he still isn’t able to come home yet, but we are hoping he will be able to be transferred from the rehabilitation hospital to a care facility close to home, so we can visit him more often and take him out on day trips.

I’m sharing this to encourage you to never take your loved ones for granted.
They can be gone in an instant. Or life as you know it could be changed forever.

If you don’t have life insurance, think about getting some form of coverage.
If you don’t have a Power of Attorney agreement for each other, consider getting it done.
If you don’t have some sort of financial plan in place in case of emergency, seriously begin now.
If you haven’t had the conversation about what you want your funeral to be like, have that conversation. Preferrably with a pen and paper in hand, then share it with your immediate family.
If you don’t have a will, write one and include all the things you want to see done after you are not here to speak for yourself.
If you have not had the difficult discussions around organ donation, or putting a Do Not Resusitate order in place have them now.

This might all seem morbid, but my brother did not have any of these in place.
The added trauma this put on his wife, and us as close family is indescribable.
We had to make the decision to turn off his life support, and deal with the miscommunications and beliefs of different family members.
We had to decide whether or not to have his leg amputated, all with the dr’s guidance of course. The final decision was ours to make. (It turned out to be the right decision. But we didn’t know that when we made the difficult choice. )
Having to work out financial logistics, with the main financial holder being unconscious and unable to give permissions for access to accounts to pay the usual household running expenses was overly frustrating, all the while trying to manage our emotions in amongst this heart breaking time was a burden that could have been lessened by forward thinking.

I know we all think we are indestructable, but one day, we may have to come face to face with our mortality.
Having had the conversations with our loved ones, will prepare them for what we want, and make getting through a very distressing time just a little bit easier.

Over the last month I’ve been counting the cost of a life, the life of my brother, the lives of my loved ones.
Even the relationships with difficult relatives.

The threat of having a loved one snatched away from me, had a very sobering effect on me.

I have always felt like I was a loner, someone who gets through life and hard times on her own, by herself, never asking for help or support.
This time everything was different, I leaned on friends, I cried on shoulders, I sought the comfort of family.
I had some really deep and difficult conversations with relatives that I struggled to get along with.

This has been the first time in my life when I felt like I could trust and lean on other people.
I know that seeking this support and allowing people to help me in a way that comforted me, is because of all the training, and living I’ve done through Life Coaching, myself coaching myself, receiving coaching from my coach, and receiving from the wisdom of my clients.

I want you to know that how you live your life everyday, has an impact.
It changes you, and those around you.
And like me you may not realize how much has changed until you have a major life event happen, that flips everything upside down.

Until next time, my friends, please consider your family if something should unexpectedly happen to you, or to them.
How can you make plans now to make an unfortunate event a little less stressful, a little less traumatic and easier for everyone to follow your wishes.

oxoxo Linda.
